Abstract

Ritual killings in Nigeria are a deeply unsettling form of gender-based violence. They are rooted in a complicated mix of cultural beliefs, economic inequalities, and failures in governance. This paper examines the various factors that lead to these terrible acts. These include the strong influence of patriarchy, the lasting impact of religious blending, widespread economic hardship, and the ongoing spread of harmful cultural myths. The analysis also looks at how these killings affect gender security and the stability of society as a whole. Such acts create fear, worsen gender inequalities, and limit women's basic rights. While recognizing the good intentions behind existing laws, especially the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act of 2015, this paper evaluates their effectiveness and points out serious gaps in how they are carried out and enforced. Using a thorough review of academic literature and reports, this study offers a set of clear policy recommendations and intervention strategies. These include legal reforms, targeted awareness campaigns, community-led projects, and economic empowerment programs. All of these aim to improve women's security and create a society that values human life.
