Abstract

This study examined the effect of noxious socio-cultural practices on the well-being of women of child-bearing age in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study investigated the effect of female genital mutilation, the practice of Traditional Birth Attendance on the well-being of women of child-bearing age in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. Literatures were reviewed on the key variables of the study. The study adopted a mixed method survey research design. One hundred and thirty-nine (139) respondents were selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data were gathered via questionnaire, and in-depth interview. Simple percentages, frequency distribution table and content analysis were used to analyse the quantitative and present the qualitative data. The findings of the study revealed that female genital mutilation, practice of traditional birth attendance, significantly affect the well-being of women of child-bearing age in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. The study recommended among other things that governments should implement and ensure strict enforcement of legislation against FGM. Laws should not only criminalize the practice but also establish several penalties for those who perform or facilitate it. Additionally, governments should invest in awareness campaigns to educate the public about the physical and psychological consequences of FGM, dispelling myths and cultural misconceptions that perpetuate the practice.
